I've seen other movies since I am just procrastinating Major Exploder - Feb 20th 2025

I have turkey fever

I seriously do not have much to say about this documentary besides that it's incredible and you need to watch it. About three weeks ago I watched Bill Hader's what's in my bag where he had picked up this movie. I asked my dad about the film, which he had little to say besides telling me to watch Errol Morris' advertisements for miller high life, which he regards as "genius." And I must admit, although very simple, they are incredibly shot and extremely memorable, traits that most definitely carry over to this film.

This movie is full of incredible little snippets of a town I have absolutely zero intention of visiting. Some of the most wonderful things I have ever heard come out of these peoples mouths, my only question is what prompted them to say it.

I just know this movie will stick with me for a long time, therefore: ★★★★★

Major Exploder - Feb 2nd 2025

I'm sad to say this movie kind of blows

The first ever interaction I had with this movie was the summer of last year. My parents and I drove up to the Aberfoyle antique market where I had spotted this poster for sale along with other bits of 80s and 90s ephemera. The poster really stood out to me cause... c'mon it totally kills ass. But in my mind, it would be unrighteous to buy a poster for a movie I knew jack shit about, so I put it in the back of my mind and left it there for a while. That is until I was perusing through the works of Cronenburg at my local video store and was reminded of this movie! I had already seen other works of David (the fly and videodrone (duh doy)) and really enjoyed them, so I had an idea of what to expect, but boy was I wrong in the worst way possible.

I went into this movie thinking "holy shit! I can't wait to see what freak shit the crazed canuck made this time" (verbatim) and for about the first twenty or so minutes I didn't feel totally stupid for thinking that! Stephen Lack drifting around a mall food court, escalator chase scenes, mind reading old people, head explosions, car wrecks, and a killer soundtrack are all the makings of a perfect movie if you ask me. But then sadly the movie fizzles out almost completely. Much to my dismay, Lack has more charisma in the first 5 minutes of the movie than the rest of it combined (one could even say he was... lack-ing) Otherwise his acting is complete buns. A lot of the concepts were really cool though, I liked the artist dude, syncing up with computers is really stupid but still awesome, and the origins of ephemerol is pretty cool but I have a hard time caring when they don't explore these ideas nearly enough. It also doesn't help that every scene is paired with the least human human known to man. I thought the final fight could have been pretty cool but it was cut short, they focussed too much on the zoo lander staring contests and not enough on how far the scanner's powers could go. I wish they took the special effects a lot further, beyond fires and face rips. When I finished the movie I seriously thought I just watched an edited version that took out all the cool shit I was hoping for.

In the end I was just left disappointed by a really cool concept laid to waste by a lack of follow through. I will not be buying this poster! ★★★☆☆
